I started listening to podcasts just over three years ago. If you follow any of my podcasts or twitter feed or blog posts you know it all started with Nobody’s Listening after I met James K. at a missions trip in St. Louis. Since then, however I’ve found that my favorite thing to do is discover new shows that explore new topics and sometimes no topics. Below is my updated list. These are the podcasts I listen to and why I keep coming back.
Nobody’s Listening – This is the one that started it all. I listen to this show because it’s done so well and it’s entertaining every single time. James and John’s chemistry is something to be learned from as a podcaster and the comedy style is right up my alley. Pretty much anything James puts out is going to be quality. It’s nice to have a go to site for quality podcasts.
Its Just Us Podcast – If you’ve ever sat in a restaurant watching a couple talk and laugh with each-other and wished you could just go sit next to them and hear what they were saying, this podcast is for you. Robert and Chelsea give weekly family updates and share about the things they love. They’ll play silly games or do reviews of products, games, movies, food, you name it! Not to mention the regular callers that give the show an element I have yet to find in any other podcast. You never know what you’re going to get but you’re guaranteed to enjoy every episode.
The Mark Gungor Show – This is a new one for me. Being someone who takes my marriage and family very seriously causes me to always be on the lookout for resources to help me be a better husband and father. The Mark Gungor Show is a no holds barred, no apologies, write in show for those who are married or who want to be. Mark is a pastor and nationally known speaker who is focused on marriage and family. They only take anonymous emails because they will not hold back what they think and they don’t want to call anyone out by name. This makes for an awesome, entertaining, but very informative and encouraging show about relationships.
Retroist Podcast – This show is exactly what it sounds like. From Tron, to Back to the Future, to text based computer games, The Retroist takes special care in each episode to bring you facts, news, nostalgic stories, and even interviews that will make you feel like a kid again.
Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History – Pretty much everyone I know that listens to podcasts listens to this one. Dan Carlin isn’t a history professor, he’s a history nerd and fan like me. This makes his show entertaining and informative all at the same time. If you liked any part of your history classes in high school you’ll love this show.
Geek Out Loud – I haven’t been listening to this show very long but I look forward to every new episode. I think I laugh harder at this show then I do any other show I listen to. (Except maybe this host’s other podcast to be mentioned next.) Steve and Derek provide a “safe place to geek out” about anything you wish. Steve is hilarious no matter what he does but adding the co-host provides an amazing chemistry that will cause you to laugh until you cry.
Big Honkin’ Show – This is Steve’s (Geek Out Loud) other show. He has just started producing new episodes and his listeners couldn’t be happier. This show started as a weekly radio show that also released a podcast feed. Now, it’s just a podcast but still has all the charm with Steve and his co-host Buck who have been long time buddies. They share stories and talk about stuff that cracks them (and listeners) up. Their bursts of laughter are enough to make me laugh until I cry but then they add these one liners and other content that makes the show quotable as well.
Stuff We Like Podcast – These podcast super-fans started their own show. It’s amazing. They have been listening to podcasts and being a participating member of audiences for what seems like an eternity. Heck, they even met and fell in love through their involvement in one of their favorite shows. Their podcast is all about the things they love, especially geeky stuff like legos, movies, and games. They update you on their wedding planning and their life as transplants to Florida. It’s a fun show and one I look forward to every week.
These are the shows I listen to faithfully. There are more that I listen to here and there and some that would have made it on the list but haven’t produced an episode in a while. If you do one of these shows, thank you, if you’re looking for more podcasts to listen to, check these out. Either way, thanks for reading.
