I live in a town that starts celebrating Christmas very early. Its a tourist town and Christmas is a busy/profitable time of year. I understand that Christmas can be commercialized sometimes. Especially in a town like this. I get it, really I do but if I hear one more person complain about how early we roll out Christmas I’m going freak out. What has me so beside myself about this? Here’s the story:
I walked into the bank this morning and stepped into line behind some random guy making a deposit or whatever. I obviously overhear their conversation, he says “I can’t believe how close it’s getting to Christmas.” Her reply is “Ugh! It’s WAY to early to start worrying about Christmas” To which he replies, “It’s really only a few weeks away.” After saying this he leaves rolling his eyes and I step up for my turn.
Not being able to leave well enough alone I comment as I walk up saying “Why would you ‘worry‘ about Christmas?”
“It’s just too early and it’s so commercialized and I don’t know it’s just this town and…” she bit back at me trailing off into the wah wah wah sound of Charlie Brown’s teacher on the Christmas specials.
I simply reply, “Well, it is a bit commercialized but what isn’t these days? My 3 year old just enjoy’s Christmas so much that we’ve had our decorations up for a couple of weeks now.”
“Oh, he’ll grow out of it.” she said with a smirk.
“I hope not.” was all I replied as I grabbed my deposit receipt and walked out of the bank.
What the heck? How could a holiday that is about at the very least cheer, family, and joy be the bane of someones existance just because you brought it up before December 1st? I was annoyed and a bit saddened by this lady’s discourse on my favorite holiday. I responded with a harsh tweet that read “If one more person tells me it’s too early to talk about Christmas I’m going to deck their halls.” Maybe that’s a bit over the top but at least I didn’t say what I wanted to. (It had to do with “balls of holly.”)
Christmas is a great holiday, it’s not only about happiness, family, peace, gifts, and jingle bells. It’s obviously about something much deeper to me than that. This lady’s reaction made me wonder why we let the so called commercialization of a holiday ruin it for us. So what if Coca Cola uses santa in their commercials to increase sales. Who cares if ACB Family plays The Christmas Story for two days strait to increase ratings during the season. I refuse to let that ruin what that holiday means to me. If I want to put my decor up before halloween so I can celebrate for two solid months I’m going to do it and you “bah humbuggers” can bugger off!
When do you decorate for Christmas? What’s your favorite part of Christmas? Do you have a story of a “bah humbugger?” Let me know in the comments below.
